"Our cover this month is a painting titled "Seahorse Motel Pool" by Galveston artist Rachel Wiley-Janota. Rachel is a talented young artist who has her works featured at René Wiley Gallery, a family-owned and operated art gallery located in downtown Galveston at 2128 Postoffice.
Rachel is an avid collector of historic Galveston postcards including the one pictured above of the of the now demolished Seahorse Motor Inn. A couple of years ago she painted a number of works for a series of mixed media paintings that featured old photos and postcards of Galveston.
She has again decided to focus on painting these retro Galveston images and she chose the one above as one of the postcards that she wanted to paint.
Join Rachel for the next ArtWalk of 2023 on October 7 from 6-10pm for the debut of her 11th solo exhibition at the gallery, titled "Western Horizons: from the West End to Big Bend & Beyond," featuring new Big Bend and West Texas landscapes to accompany her Gulf Coast paintings.
This month in our “A Look Back” feature on page 74, we revisit the Seahorse Motor Inn that was located at 3402 Seawall Blvd. We have attached that article as well as an image of the postcard that was the inspiration for Rachel's Seahorse Inn painting that is our October 2023 cover."

"An intimate look into the working practices of local artist Rachel Wiley-Janota. Galveston artist Rachel Wiley-Janota is renowned for her mastery in producing mixed-media paintings, canvas giclée prints, and photography.
Her artistic arsenal is as diverse as her experiences. She deftly navigates a range of mediums, from the delicate strokes of watercolors and inks to the bold textures of acrylics and oils. Unconventional in her approach, she sometimes incorporates beeswax, encaustic, and gold leaf into her pieces, lending them an otherworldly luminance."

“Artist and mother, Wiley-Janota spends most of her time working from her studio on the Texas Gulf Coast with her two young sons and husband. She is known for her Gulf Coast landscapes, with her focus on local salt marshes and clouded skies, as she often views from her car or kayak. Wiley-Janota divides her time between art-making and motherhood, traveling together to paint and explore, from the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico to the deserts and mountains of West Texas.
This year they drove back from Oregon to Texas together and spent days on the road in the desert towns of Nevada and New Mexico. Her new show of mixed media paintings celebrates the sky over the places that renew the spirit for both the artist and many others. Open skies painted from both deserts and deserted coastlines, combining the vintage aesthetics of lost motels, weathered storms, and forgotten places, all captured from the roads connecting them. The new works have a dreamlike quality to them, blending together layers of paint and memories, honoring both past and present while preserving these moments in time.” -Rene Wiley Gallery, 2023

May 2022 - Coast Magazine, "Soaking It Up," by JOHN WAYNE FERGUSON
"For Rachel Wiley-Janota, Galveston’s beaches aren’t just a place of peace, but a place of inspiration.Wiley-Janota, a Galveston artist whose work is on display at her family’s gallery on Postoffice Street in the island’s downtown, spends many mornings out on the beach with an easel and palette, and sometimes a sleeping baby nearby, trying to capture the scenic nature of the beach — whatever that might be on a given day.“It’s this one place you go, and it’s always different,” she said. “For me, it’s the fact it’s always going to be a mystery of what kind of weather is there, what kind of clouds, what kind of colors.”The beach brings new challenges all the time, she said.“Right now, I’ve been really into trying to capture the morning or the evening golden light,” Wiley-Janota said. “It just shimmers off the water. I’ve been using actual gold leaf to try to create that. I’m attempting to capture that sparkly glow.”
